Matsuo Basho (1644-1694)

Three haikus
translated by Robert Hass.

       Even in Kyoto --
hearing the cuckoo's cry --
        I long for Kyoto.

       As for the hibiscus
on the roadside --
        my horse ate it.

       Summer grass --
all that's left
        of warriors' dreams.
