Two Children

When I Was Very, Very Young

by Rachel A. Gold

When I was very, very young
My sister was so very tall
She always told me what to do
Because I was so young and small.

When we went walking with our mom
Our mom said - "Hold big sisters hand
Then you'll be safe" and so I did
Though small I still could understand.

But then one day when I was two
My sister wasn't there - I wondered why
I said "Where's big sister?" and my mother said
"She's gone to school. She will return- don't cry"

I didn't understand at all
But sure enough she did come home.
I hadn't seen her go, and
I didn't see her come.
