Surrender
by Rachel A. Gold
I closed my heart to keep you out,
With fast-fixed bands of steel;
I closed my mind to wayward thoughts,
Determined not to yield;
I tried my best to banish you,
Uproot you from my mind;
In spite of everything I did,
One day I waked to find:
I think of nothing, dear, but you,
And you're first in my heart;
The bands of steel dissolved and gone,
I'm sorry for my part;
I knew your love was hoping, dear,
Your voice, and smile, and eyes,
These all told me the truth; at last,
I'm getting to be wise.
