Bitten by a Muse

He thought great thoughts
And could enter any conversation
But he could not write
Or make a poem by convention

Then one dark and stormy night
When the lights were down low
He got smitten by a Muse
And that was quite a blow

He started to write
He could not be stopped
All day, all night
Until he dropped

And when he was through
You should have seen his book
It made "War and Peace"
Look like a notebook

And when he was through
His real work did begin
He tried to sell his book
The work of mind and pen

From one publisher to the next
John went to and fro
He was rejected by each one
But finally didn't know

His book was finally published
Printed without a flaw
By a small company
Owned by his brother-in-law
