Kittens learn to use the litter box from watching our mothers. If a kitten is weaned too early, it may not have the best litter-box manners. That's not really what I am mewing about in this class, though. To read about litter-box manners, see my class on that subject.
This section is about scratching litter out of the box. And about burying the stinking stuff. These are two huge complaints I get from cat "owners", and honestly, there is not much I can mew to them.
We cats, if we are going to bury our messes, must dig, and this digging naturally scatters litter everywhere. That is the nature of cats and the nature of litter. Some litters stay in the box better than others - my human is trying out the pelleted litter right now. Humans can place the litter box on a large mat to help keep the litter in one place (try Home Depot for a floor mat). Otherwise, they should keep a dust pan handy and stop complaining.
If a cat is lazy and does not dig, the litter doesn't scatter. Then I get complaints because the kitty doesn't cover up the smelly stuff. Mew, some cats just have bad manners - but at least the humans has less scattered litter to clean up! I recommend that the humans remove the solid waste as often as necessary to keep the box smelling good. As far as I know, no cat will learn to cover his litter from watching a human do it, so don't frustrate yourself with trying.
