Most problems with the litter box are caused by one of these: early weaning, dirty litter box, too many cats using the litter box, litter box not in a safe place.

If you are separated from your mother too early, she will not have a chance to complete your litter box training. Kittens need to stay with their mothers until they are at least eight weeks old. It is best if they can stay until they are twelve weeks old. You learn many good things from your mother, and litter box manners is one of these.

No matter how well you are litter trained, if the box gets filthy you may decide to go somewhere else. Some cats are more sensitive to filth than others. Some cats will dig through the and the cheerfully, while others refuse the box if it is at all dirty. The humans should clean it daily for best results.

If there are a lot of cats (a lot meaning more than one) using the same box, this can cause problems. Of course, the box gets dirty sooner, but there is more involved than this. When you deposit your products, you also deposit your smell. A very timid cat may not use a box that is used by a more assertive cat, because the box "belongs" to the more assertive cat. Humans can get around this problem by having more than one litter box in the house.

When you are on the litter box you don't like to be disturbed. The box needs to be in a quiet place with more than one exit so that you feel safe. Humans don't usually do their business in the middle of a busy area, and neither will you. Insist upon a place of your own in a quiet, safe place like a bathroom with two doors. This way you won't feel trapped if you should accidentally be disturbed.
