Dear Midnight,
I just moved into a home with my two cats, husband and dog. We have been
here for just over a month. While vacuuming today my hibby noticed a few
pee stains on the rug in a few places. I know that sometimes cats pee to
mark their territories and I also know they pee to tell you there is a
problem. Which do you think it may be. The cats(I do not know which of
them) also tend to pee and poo on the floor next to their litter box
almost bi-daily. One cat is fat and one is skinny. The skinny one screams
vocally all the time. He is very hyper and noisy for a five year old cat.
Is there something I can do to relax him more? Please let me know anything
you can help me with. Thanks, (signed)
Judy
Dear Human,
Let me answer your questions one at a time. I think your kitties are probably unsettled still from the move and
marking the space. I would be relaxed about it, but I would also
take them to the vet to make sure everything is all right
physically. If the problem contines or gets worse, then you will need to look
for other causes. For now, I would take the easy way out byjust
loving the kitties, helping them feel more secure in this strange
place. The missing the box business is usually caused because the
box is too small. Most litter boxes are tiny, and kitties have to
crunch up to get things into the sand. I used to miss my box
frequently until my humans got me a bigger box. Now I have
space inside to assume a nomal position and I never miss the
box. Another cause of missing the box is a dirty box. You should
pick it out every day. This is especially important when more
than one cat is using the box. Now, the nervous cat - well, I think you have a nervous, active
cat. Some cats are like that, expecially thouse that are part
Siamese. He is five - in another year or two he will start settling down,
but he may remain very active until his old age. If this bothers you, try
to avoid getting a cat with any Siamese blood the next time. Persian type
cats tend to be more relaxed. With mixed breed cats from the animal
shelter, or from a private home, you do take your chances with temperment. I camne from the animal shelter, and I personally am high
strung. I used to be very active, but I am not noisy. My mew is
very soft. Now that I am seven, I sleep whenever I am not
pawing out this column.
Disclaimer I am not a vet or a trained animal psychologist. I am a cat.
As I always mew, ask your vet about medical problems without delay.
