Dear Midnight
I have a 12/13 year old siamese mix. I've had him since he
was a kitten, at six months he was diagnosed urinary crystals. We switched
food and up untill recently we haven't had any other health problems. This
past year he's lost about 8lbs (he was about 20lbs before), and rather
suddenly. He had occasional to often diarreah. He was vomiting for a
while, and "going" outside the litterbox, nothing was safe, rugs, couch,
etc. I took him to the vet and we have run literally hundreds of dollars
in tests and trial medications, which we found was making his symptoms
worse. So I took him off everything and refused to pay for anymore "trial
treatments". I've had to lock him in the spare bedroom to prevent any
accidents, but whatever I did seemed to have worked. I can't trust him in
the rest of the house, and he HATES being locked in. He's been in there
for about 8 months, at first he was fine with it. Now he crys and bangs on
door. If I let him out he'll sit with me for awhile, then gets down and
cries more. In fact the only time he is not crying is when he is sitting
in my lap. I just don't know what to do, he seems to have energy, acts
like he is starving all the time (and I know he eats good), and he
continues to loose weight. I've tried all the tests, and now I am at a
complete loss, I know I can't just get rid of him, but I don't think I can
take many more sleepness nights especially after the baby is born.

So do you think I'm dealing with a behavior problem or health problem? Oh,
I have tried ignoring the behavior at night, and I make sure he gets out
everynight before bedtime, to "wear" him out. (I read your other article
on the subject)Any help you can give me by either telling me what you
think may be wrong with him or by helping me keep him quiet at night I
would really appreciate it.
Dear Human
If you can get
him
to a vet school or a cat specialist you might get you both
some
relief. If not, you could try a new vet, or even return to
your
old vet and give the vet another chance.
If the vet thinks it is a behavior problem, she can give
you
some new things to try. However, the extreme weight
loss
indicates that it is a medical problem. It sounds like
chronic
kidney disease to me, but he does need tests to confirm
this.
(I am not a vet kitty)
I suggest that you go through one more round of testing.
If
kidney disease or some other disease is confirmed at
least you
can get some good advise on what to do about it.
You sound like you have done all you can do to keep him
happy
and to keep the humans happy at the same time. Before
you
have the baby, please get him tested. A diagnosis may be
possible now after this time has passed, and will help you
know
the best thing to do.
Purrs and good luck
Good luck
